Personal Story

Still in the Game: My First Year with SpinalSyn

There comes a point in every golfer’s life when the warm-up starts taking longer than the round. For me, the problem was my lower back. I could usually make it through the front nine without much trouble, but by the 12th or 13th hole, the stiffness would settle in. My swing shortened, my concentration slipped, and I started thinking more about my back than the next shot.

I wasn’t ready to give up golf, but I had started making small compromises. I played less often, avoided consecutive rounds, and occasionally chose nine holes when I really wanted to play 18. Even practice sessions became shorter because I knew that hitting a full bucket of balls could leave me uncomfortable the following day.

Looking for Something Practical

Over the years, I tried many of the things golfers with troublesome backs tend to try: stretching programs, different warm-ups, massage, heat, and more attention to my posture and swing mechanics. Some helped more than others, and several remain part of my routine today.

The difficulty was not necessarily finding something that offered temporary relief. It was finding a routine that I could follow consistently on my own. Positioning therapy pads accurately on the middle of my back involved an awkward combination of reaching, twisting, guessing, and occasionally asking my wife for assistance.

I first came across SpinalSyn a little over a year ago. I wasn’t expecting a miracle, and I certainly didn’t expect it to turn back the clock. What interested me was the practical idea behind it: a system that could help me position the pads consistently without needing another person to do it for me.

Becoming Part of My Routine

It took only a short time to become comfortable with the setup. Once I had established the positions that worked for my routine, I could reproduce them without the usual trial and error. That consistency may sound like a minor convenience, but it changed how regularly I used the therapy.

I generally use SpinalSyn after a round, following a longer practice session, or in the evening when my back feels particularly tired. On weeks when I’m playing more frequently, I also use it between rounds as part of my broader recovery routine.

The biggest advantage for me is that it requires very little thought. I don’t need to find someone to help, spend several minutes trying to reach the right location, or wonder whether the pads are positioned differently from the previous session. I can set everything up independently and get on with my evening.

The Difference After One Year

The improvement did not arrive as one dramatic moment. There was no particular morning when I woke up feeling 20 years younger. Instead, I began noticing an accumulation of ordinary, better days.

I felt more comfortable after playing and less apprehensive about booking another round later in the week. I was no longer automatically assuming that 18 holes on Saturday would mean an uncomfortable Sunday. My back still reminded me of my age from time to time, but it stopped dominating my thoughts around golf.

Perhaps the most meaningful change has been confidence. Back discomfort can make you cautious even before it appears. You shorten the follow-through, avoid committing fully to a shot, or start worrying about a difficult lie before reaching the ball. Feeling more confident in my ability to manage my back has allowed me to focus more fully on the game itself.

What SpinalSyn Has—and Has Not—Done

SpinalSyn has not replaced exercise, stretching, sensible warm-ups, or professional advice. I still pay attention to my body, avoid hitting too many balls when I’m tired, and accept that there are days when rest is the wiser choice.

It has also not eliminated every episode of stiffness or discomfort. I don’t believe any honest golfer of my age would expect that. What it has done is make one useful part of my recovery routine considerably easier, more repeatable, and more independent.

That practical difference matters. A routine only helps when you actually follow it, and I am far more likely to remain consistent with something that does not require assistance or unnecessary effort.

Staying on the Course

A year after starting with SpinalSyn, I’m still playing regularly. I’m completing more 18-hole rounds, practicing with greater confidence, and spending less time worrying about how my back will feel the following morning.

For younger players, success is often measured by distance, scores, or handicap. As the years pass, the definition becomes a little broader. Being able to meet friends at the course, walk onto the first tee, and enjoy an afternoon outdoors begins to feel like an achievement in itself.

SpinalSyn has helped me maintain a routine that supports that goal. It hasn’t made me a younger golfer—or, unfortunately, fixed my putting—but it has helped me remain a more active and confident one.

At this stage of life, staying in the game is the victory. And for me, SpinalSyn has become a valued part of making that possible.
